We are extremely sensitive to how people use and experience the built form.  After years of contemplation about our design expressions, we concluded ten elements define what we do, a cluster of ideas we call our design approach:<br>

1.	A house must inhabit a site in order for it to feel like a home.  That’s why our firm is composed of an architect and a landscape architect looking to marry the house and its surrounding to make a memorable place.  The house must belong to the site.  <br>
2.	We see the entire site as your home, creating rooms outside as well as in.  Blessed here in Costa Rica with climate that affords nearly year-round outdoor living, our work expresses Costa Rica’s unique opportunities to enjoy lifestyles inside and out: Courtyards outfitted with water and palms that offer shade and dynamic shadows, deep porches that shade the windows and collect the breeze, and tall ceilings that draw away the heat<br>
3.	Surprisingly few recognize that the shape of the roof carries more meaning to the home’s character than any other single element.  Not only does it imply shelter but to the outside observer, it suggests how the home is inhabited, what goes on where, how the various spaces relate. Here in Costa Rica it also represents the home’s primary defense against our strong and often violent weather.  Our experience leads us to believe that the roof shouldn’t be an afterthought nor should it be merely symbolic, devoid the structural integrity that makes a home vulnerable to the wind and water.<br>
4.	Light, both natural and artificial, draws people into rooms and delivers the continence of the room’s character.  Without capturing light, washing the interior spaces with it, rooms appear lifeless and flat.  Wherever possible we try to befriend light and employ its warmth and power to surprise, accent and enliven space.<br>
5.	A home is more than an assembly of parts, materials and spaces – entry, roof, garage, kitchen -- all must combine in some graceful, rhythmic way.  Ignore the proportions of the ingredients of any culinary recipe and one has nothing more than a recipe for disaster.   Architectural design is the same way.  All the parts must combine in an orderly and harmonious fashion, in the appropriate proportions.  Mastering this skill is the true measure of a good designer.<br>
6.	How a house presents and reveals itself, its flow, tells the story of its participation in a family’s life.  Like any story, one should find places in a home to pause and reflect, laugh and cry, work and play, spaces that draw you in and direct you to participate in its offerings.<br>
7.	Rooms are meant to hold and foster activity, some collective activities, some singular.  We find the home centers on the collective group activities while the perimeters are better suited for the private, secluded ones.  Kitchens always collect friends and family and are usually found at the core of most homes.  Bedrooms are farther from these sometimes noisy, public spaces, more a private retreat, a place separate.  We must respect this hierarchy of purpose or some portion of the design fails.<br>
8.	The home has historically been a place of refuge, a safe haven that even the cave man enjoyed.  From this secure vantage point, however, the next common need is a view, a place from which one can survey the scenery beyond.  Some views are dramatic, a coastline, a mountain range, a city skyline.  Other views are more intimate, a tree, a bench, or a pool of water.  Nonetheless, observing the outside world from a secure domicile is an intrinsic characteristic of the place we call home.   <br>
9.	Places in Between, transitional space, places that are neither here nor there, are equally as important as the ones with readily defined purposes.  The front courtyard, the covered entry porch, a temporary shelter from the rain, the hallway hung with family photos, the built-in window seat on the stair landing between floors – places we pass or pass through but where we rarely tarry – all seem essential and belong to the whole composition of a home.  <br>
10.	The composition of the home’s finish materials is as important as the composition of its space.  Materials mean something to the observer; they convey a sense of style to others.  If clothes make the man, materials make the home.<br>
